Thank you to everyone who came out to the rally on November 5th at Washington Square Park. It was a cold day, but so many wonderful supporters showed up with signs, enthusiasm, and green fingers! A special thanks to the representatives who addressed the crowd, to those who wrote letters to our NY Senators, and planted a seed. Check out photos from the event below.

PART OF NATIONAL EFFORT, NEW YORKERS TO RALLY FOR FEDERAL CLIMATE CHANGE ACTION IN WASHINGTON SQUARE PARK.
Lt. Governor Paterson, Rep. Weiner, Climate Scientists to Address Crowd.
On Saturday November 3rd, the Step It Up Climate Change Campaign is commencing its second national day of action in communities in all 50 States. The organizers of the New York City rally, to be held in Manhattan’s Washington Square Park between 12pm and 2pm, predict a turnout equal to or exceeding the 3,000-person attendance of the previous April 14th event held in Battery Park.
Held one year before the 2008 presidential election, the event seeks to send a clear message to Washington: climate change is an important voter issue. “It’s become increasingly clear that citizens across the country now support serious policy approaches that are both proportional to the threat of global warming, and informed by science rather than partisan politics and small picture thinking” says Chris Neidl, a local activist and one of several organizers of Saturday’s event. The Step It Up platform calls for three distinct policy objectives: 1) an 80% cut in CO2 emissions by 2050; 2) a moratorium on new coal-burning power plants; and 3) large-scale public investment in ‘green collar’ job development and training.
Event Organizers have confirmed speaking appearances by New York State Lieutenant Governor David Paterson, and Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY), and anticipate the addition of other elected officials by the date of the event. Other speakers will include local climate activists, New York City youth, and renowned physicist and climate policy scholar Martin Hoffert, Ph.D. The rally will also be held in conjunction with an electronics-recycling drop-off, musical performances, and constituent letter-writing activities.
